A digital exhibit is an online, curated collection of objects that usually incorporates a narrative or pedagogical component. Digital exhibits are sometimes created to accompany exhibits in the real world or to showcase archival materials, in which case they may include photos and videos of physical objects. However, they can also be created using born-digital objects, such as online videos and social media posts, maps, or interactive media.

Digital exhibits can range in complexity, and the most simple may just be static webpages. Platforms like Omeka and Scalar are designed specifically for building digital exhibits and incorporate features like annotations, built-in metadata schema, and easy collection building. If you are interested in learning more about digital exhibits, get in touch with the Digital Scholarship & Publishing team via Ask Us or at ULS-DigitalScholarshipServices@groups.pitt.edu. We can help you choose the right platform, plan your exhibit, and provide information about accessibility and copyright.
