ProQuest offers a service to register your ETD with the U.S. Copyright Office for a fee of $75.

You can individually file for your own copyright for $45-$65. https://www.copyright.gov/registration/index.html

Copyright of your dissertation is owned by you, the author, as soon as you create it (or, in copyright law talk, "fix in a tangible form"). When your ETD is deposited in D-Scholarship@Pitt, even with an embargo, the protection of copyright is automatic by this expression of the work. However, registering your work with the U.S. Copyright Office can expedite any litigation that you would want to file if someone infringes upon your rights.
