Open Journal Systems (OJS) is the open-source software that the ULS uses to manage our e-journals. OJS was created by the Public Knowledge Project, through its efforts to expand and improve access to research, and was released under the GNU General Public License.
OJS is one of the most widely used software solutions for journal publishing and is supported by a robust global community of users and developers. It is fully web-based and extremely user friendly. You can manage everything from the workflow for submission to peer review to production in the same space.
In 2023, PKP reported that more than 50,000 journals globally have published 5 or more items using OJS. They say that more than 8 million items total have been published.
The ULS provides OJS support and training for POLP journal editors. During the journal onboarding process, POLP staff train editors on OJS functions and workflows, and once the journal is active, POLP staff continue to provide support in terms of advice and troubleshooting techniques. Folks in the ULS have been a part of PKP and OJS development, so any time there are questions or issues with the system, we are here to help.
