Word Template

To allow Word to generate the bookmarks for the preliminary pages when making your PDF, we created a style called Preliminary Bookmarks. This style is then applied to the title for each of the Preliminary pages up to the Table of Contents. You may not be able to see it as it is in 1pt font and colored white to blend in with the page. If you need to edit it, please try these steps:

  1. Click on the title in the Navigation Pane or put your cursor on the line with the title that is styled as Preliminary Bookmark.
  2. Then select an alternate style, such as Normal.
  3. Make the edits to the title.
  4. With the cursor still on that line, select Preliminary Bookmarks.

If you have completed this correctly, it should appear as intended in the Navigation Pane and convert properly in the PDF version.

If you don't see this style mentioned, you might not be using the most recent version of the ETD template. In that case, contact ETD Support for assistance (https://etd.pitt.edu/help).

LaTeX Template

To edit the preliminary headings found in the template, you will need to access the pittetd.cls file. On around line 409, you will find the following string:

\protect\BOOKMARK
            [0][]{prelim.0}{Title Page}{}}}

You can then change the Title Page to be in sentence case or all capitals if requested by your school.

You should then be able to continue sequentially in the pittetd.cls file and locate the other statements that follow for the remaining preliminary pages. It should be noted that you may also need to change the typeout statements for pages that show the title on the page, such as the Table of Contents, List of Figures/Tables, Preface, etc.

If you don't have access to the pittetd.cls file or are not using the Pitt LaTeX template, please contact ETD Support for assistance (https://etd.pitt.edu/help).
