Students began submitting electronic theses and dissertations in December 2001; prior to that electronic submissions were not accepted. These theses and dissertations can be found in D-Scholarship.
University of Pittsburgh dissertations submitted since 1997, however, have been scanned and posted online as electronic texts by ProQuest's UMI division as a routine part of the dissertation publication experience. These dissertations are available via ProQuest Digital Database.
